The Story of Your Skin: Multigenerational Skincare with Botnia
Beauty is the feeling that arises when we truly see the world—its colors, shapes, people, and ourselves. As someone in the beauty industry, I think about beauty constantly.
These days, I wonder about the feeling of beauty and where it comes from. The answer is simple: love. Self-love, love for others, love for the spaces and objects we treasure. What I’m saying is that beauty is a result of love; the two are conjoined.
When I look in the mirror now, I notice how my face is changing with time and age. I see more and more of my aunts, my mother, and my grandmother in my reflection. I love thinking about them because it helps me cultivate self-love—and in turn, I see my own beauty.
Youth has its own special kind of beauty, though. When I look at my daughter I’m reminded of my younger self, and the lessons I’ve learned about self-love guide me as I help her see herself and love the way she looks. For us, cultivating beauty involves caring for her skin, caring for our home, and embracing her sense of style and identity.
Beauty is multigenerational—it moves through time and connects us.
I remember holding my grandmother’s hand when she passed, thinking how beautiful she was: her milky skin, her soft hands. I also recall seeing my daughter for the first time after giving birth—her eyelashes, fingernails, and face were so delicate and beautiful. And I’m reminded of watching my mother get ready for a dinner party when I was a child—how she washed her face, applied her creams, and carefully put on mascara. In the end, I thought she was so beautiful not because she matched any standard, but because she was practicing self-love by caring for herself so specifically.
This is what multigenerational skincare means to me. It’s a moment of self-love—caring for yourself, looking in the mirror and seeing your beautiful ancestors or children reflected there, and nurturing your skin and body with love.

Justine
