The esthetician’s guide to facials for menopause
Why is it that teen facials are everywhere on spa menus, but on the flip side, no one’s talking about facials for menopause? Anti-aging facials lump all wise skin into one category, when in reality, menopause is its own profound shift.
There’s a whole group of people (half the population) going through one of the biggest transitions of their lives, and they’re pouring billions of dollars into finding support. And yet, our industry still doesn't even name it. Rather than so much focus on aging, this stage in life requires a different and more intentional approach.
It’s time to honor this life stage and create more space in our industry for visibility and support around menopause. It’s something we want to see more of on treatment menus, in training rooms, and in how we show up for our guests.
This year, our annual esthetician workshop is focused on caring for skin in menopause. We’ll be talking about what’s happening under the surface, how it shows up in the skin, and how we can hold space holistically, using the tools we have as estheticians.
Here are a few ways you can start showing up for this transition:
-
Add a menopause facial to your menu. Skin can become dry, reactive, flushed, or sensitive. Reach for calming plants and hydrating formulas that bring the skin back into balance. The back bar is designed to give our estheticians the tools to treat anyone who walks into the treatment room.
-
Be thoughtful about comfort. Layer the bed so guests can adjust for temperature. Skip steam or heat if it’s not helpful.
-
Reach for cooling tools during a hot flash: Gua Sha, cool globes, chilled towels instead of warm ones. Offer iced chamomile tea instead of a warm beverage.
-
Use light lymphatic drainage. Gentle movement helps with puffiness, moves stagnation, and calms the nervous system.
-
Use ingredients for at-home care that’ll help continue care: antioxidants for repair, plant peptides and hyaluronic acid for hydration, vitamin rich for brightening, and enzymes for exfoliation.
-
Make space. A simple checkbox on your intake form gives your guest the chance to share that they’re in this phase.
Let’s show up for the women walking through this powerful portal. Let’s offer presence, tenderness, and the kind of care that shows them this is the beginning of something wiser, softer, and deeply alive. Because small moments of care can become reminders that their changing body is worthy of tenderness, not fear.
