Skin barrier protection with Botnia’s fall essentials
Do you notice dry itchy skin once the weather becomes cooler? A change in humidity can cause your skin to lose moisture – and if you’re in a region where sweater weather is the season, it’s probably time to update your skincare routine!
The science of skin during autumn
Dry air and less humidity = dry skin. How does this happen?
“Cooler temperatures and low humidity can make your skin more vulnerable to water loss–what we call TEWL, or transepidermal water loss.” –Julianna, Botnia Master Esthetician
Dry air will pull moisture from the skin, leaving it feeling tight, flaky, or even irritated depending on the health of the skin barrier.
Is your skin ready to make the switch?
Here are the most common indicators that your skin is ready to transition to fall skincare:
-Tightness
-Itchiness
-Dry, flaky skin
-Worsening of existing skin conditions
-Lackluster or dull skin
-Pink or redness in the skin, especially when you go outside
-Flare-ups of existing skin conditions
-More noticeable fine lines and wrinkles
Though these indicators aren't necessarily the case for all skin types. Because so many of us experience a seasonal shift in temperature and humidity, if you notice a change in your skin, it’s the perfect time to revisit your skincare and book a facial with your esthetician too!
Swap out, swap in
Remove products that can further dry out your skin for hydrating gentle products that build up the health of your barrier.
Swap out:
Foaming face washes
Swap in:
Nourishing simple cleansers that keep your barrier intact and build up your microbiome. Try Gentle Cleanser or Balancing Oil Cleanser for a cleanse that won’t dry out your skin.
Swap out:
Toner
Swap in:
Rose Geranium Hydrosol, especially if you’re using the Gentle Cleanser to add a slight acidity back to your skin that keeps your skin at a healthy pH in the most gentle way.
Swap in:
A hydrating moisturizer, like Daily Face Cream so your skin stays plump, dewy, and protected. Like your favorite sweater protecting you from the cold.
Swap in (optional):
To help brighten skin or reduce the look of sun spots from the summer, add in Wisdom Oil over your face cream or Well Serum in lieu of a moisturizer to help regenerate new skin cells and promote a brighter complexion.
Swap in:
If you have dry, flaky skin, exfoliate with Exfoliation Mask and Essential Enzymes. This gentle but powerful duo will help to turn over any dead skin cells and brighten without the use of harsh physical scrubs.
