At the Botnia Lab, we’re eagerly discussing our summer plans and all the things we are looking forward to this coming June. With Memorial Day just around the corner, we know this is the weekend that kick starts it all!
We believe that everything in life is connected and we want to offer more than just our skincare. Having good skin includes a proper skincare regimen, a healthy diet, sleep, and exercise. But we don’t want to forget that our minds can also have a huge effect on our body too! We truly believe that a healthy peaceful mind = clear skin.
Read the signs//
When you’re feeling stressed, your body will let you know! Only recently has the brain-skin connection been researched scientifically, but the complex relationship between stress and skin conditions has been documented since ancient times.
Stress can show up in the skin in many different ways including psoriasis, rosacea, eczema, and even hives or fever blisters. This happens because the hormones from your sympathetic nervous system, like adrenaline and cortisol, are pumped into your body that reacts to help you deal with the stress. Unfortunately, these days, we’re not being chased by tigers, and the immune system overreacts, sending out an inflammatory response causing a negative reaction to your skin from the stress you’re feeling. When you start to see these inflammatory signs in your skin, it’s probably a good time to assess the stress in your life and find healthy ways to clear your mind and relax.
Self-care = Self-love
Your whole body needs nutrition. From the food we eat to the products we put on our body, and the thoughts that enter our mind; all of these factors work in synergy to create a happy, healthy human body. A gentle reminder: It’s okay to take some time to care for yourself because self-care = self-love and we want you to love every inch of yourself.
While you’re packing your bags for the long weekend, or just staying local and enjoying all that life has to offer where you’re at, we’d love to share a few summer book and podcast recommendations from the Botnia Team!
Justine is reading The Book of Lymph by Lisa Levitt Gainsley, CLT. In this book, Gainsley explains how to maintain lymphatic health, sharing the five-minute self-massage techniques she originally developed for her high-powered Los Angeles clientele.
Dani, our master esthetician, enjoyed Braiding Sweetgrass by Robin Wall Kimmerer. “It’s amazing and a beautifully written book about indigenous foods and the story behind them,” says Dani.
Sara, director of communications, is listening to Our Nature Podcast, which explores the methods, systems, and practices that bring us into greater harmony and alignment with the natural world. She’s also reading The Secret History by Donna Tartt!
Amanda, our other in-house master esthetician, is looking into Body Into Balance: An Herbal Guide to Holistic Self-Care by Maria Noel Groves. (You can even get a signed book by Maria!)
Michelle, our resident herbalist and skincare maker, always gives us great bits from The Astrology Podcast. “It’s fun and very informative. The host is smart and explains the topics well!”
Jonathan, our shipping specialist, is always listening to How I Built This with Guy Raz, NPR Podcast on his drive to work.
Melanie, our cosmetic chemist, has been reading Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins from 1984. “It’s about two perfumers from different centuries on a quest to find immortality. It’s wild and dreamy and humorous and everyone I know that has read it speaks highly of it,” mentions Melanie. “I watched a movie the other day and LOVED it, it’s called A Map of Tiny Perfect Things. It’s also a short story so it kinda counts! 🤪”
Peonie, from ops/customer care, is reading Glow from Within by Joanna Vargas and The Beauty Detox Solution by Kimberly Snyder and learning how to get glowing skin! Also recommended, this short film by Kerry Washington, In The Sun.
We hope that you can relax and enjoy summer with a huge bottle of water, SPF, a hat, and some good reads. Let us know what you’re reading in the comments below!
